Alpharetta Lawn Mowing Tips
Regular mowing is important to maintaining a healthy, attractive lawn. Improper mowing can cause more harm than good. Following a few basic mowing tips will help keep your lawn healthy and looking great.
Select the appropriate type of lawnmower – Depending on the size of your yard, you may need a reel mower, a push mower, or a riding mower. Consider using a non-powered reel mower for very small yards. A powered push mower is a good choice for medium sized yards and you should consider a riding mower if your yard is an acre or more. For all types of mowers, the cutting blades should be kept sharp.
Lawn Mowing Tips
Adjust the mowing height – Adjust the wheels on your mower according to the manufacturer’s instructions to the right mowing height for your lawn. Warm season grasses such as centipede, Bermuda grass, and St. Augustine grass should be cut to about 1 to 1 ½ inches, while fescue, bluegrass and other cool season grasses should be cut a little taller, between 2 to 3 inches.
Mow often – A healthy lawn will need to be mowed once every week or two. Mow often enough that you cut off no more than a third of the height of the grass.
Clear the yard of obstacles – Before mowing, clear the yard of all obstacles and debris such as rocks, bottles, toys, tree branches, and pine cones. Not only can these items cause damage to the mower, but they can become projectiles injuring you or someone else or causing damage to cars and windows.
Wait until the yard is dry – Don’t try to mow when the lawn is wet. Not only will the clippings clump and clog the mower, but it is easy to slip on the wet grass and get your foot caught under the mower.
Mow in a Pattern – Mow in a straight “back and forth” pattern, overlapping each pass by half the width of the mower. Alternate patterns every few weeks for best results.
